Preliminary Results of National Census 2078

 National census of Nepal 2078 is a 12th census and first census after the latest constitution which was implemented in 2072 BS in Nepal. This census was conducted in two phases starting from Bikram Samvat(B.S.) 2078 Bhadra 30 to Ashwin 18 as a first phase and 2078 Kartik 25 to Mangshir 9 as a second phase. Till now, only the preliminary result of this census is released and final result after processing the data is expected to release in the month of Poush 2079 B.S.

The census was conducted in all the area of Nepal defined by the new political map. As of this census, the total population of Nepal is 29,192,480. The population is increased by 2,697,976 (10.18%) comparing the population of previous census which was conducted 10 years ago, in 2068 B.S. The population of Nepal in previous census was 26,494,504. According to the National Census 2078, the yearly population increment rate is 0.93% which was 1.35% in previous 2068 census.

The population of male, according to National Census 2078, is 14,291,311, which is 48.96% of total population and the population of female is 14,901,169, which is 51.04% of total population. In previous census of 2068, the population of male and female was 48.5% and 51.5% respectively.

According to National Census 2078, the total number of families living in Nepal is 6,761,059 and they live in 5,643,945 houses. That means, in average 12 families are living in 10 houses. The number of families have been increased by 24.57% than 10 years ago.

The geological distribution of population in Terai region has been increased in 2078 BS compared to 2068 BS. According to census 2068, 50.27% population of total population was living in terai region in 2068 BS which has now increased to 53.66%. Population of Himalayan region has decreased from 6.73% to 6.09% in 2078 BS. Similarly, Population of Hilly region has decreased to 40.25% from 43.01%.

The annual population growth rate in Himalayan region is negative i.e. -0.02% while the growth rate in Hilly region is 0.29% and terai region has the highest population growth rate than other regions which is 1.56%.

The provincial distribution of population shows that the province with higher population is Madhesh Province and lower populated province is Karnali Province who share the 20.99% and 5.81% of population respectively of total population. 

The district with highest population is Kathmandu District with the population of 2,017,532 and lowest populated district is Manang with population of 5,645. Morang, Rupandehi, Jhapa and Sunsari are second, third, fourth and fifth districts respectively with higher population. The districts with lower population are Mustang, Dolpa, Rasuwa and Humla which are second, third, fourth and fifth districts respectively with lowest population.

In local level, the most populated 5 municipalities are: Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bharatpur, Lalitpur and Birgunj municipality, whereas, the least populated 5 municipalities are Thulibheri, Tripurasundari, Madi, Laligurans and Jiri municipality. Baijanath Rural Municipality is the rural municipality having higher population with population of 70,315 and Narpabhumi rural municipality has the lowest population of 398.

The population density of Nepal according to latest census is 198 person per square kilometers, which was, at 2068 census, 180.

The population of Nepalese citizens living abroad is 2,169,478 where male population is 1,763,315 (81.28%) and female population is 406,163 (18.72%). 10 years ago this figures were 1921494 population living abroad where male population was 87.64% and female was 12.36%.

This preliminary result of National Census 2078 was based on control form and these facts and figures may be changed after the publication of final result.
